When a tanker truck fire caused the collapse of a bridge on Interstate 95 north of Philadelphia in mid- June of this year, federal, state and city agencies came together to formulate a plan to get this critical highway infrastructure back open for traffic within three weeks. JBC Associates is proud to share that our firm was asked to join the Emergency Bridge Response team and provide Construction Inspection services for the temporary bridge repair.

A 70’ wide highway gap where the bridge once stood was backfilled by local contractor, Buckley & Company, with ultra lightweight foamed glass aggregate (UL-FGA) produced by Eddystone-based Aero Aggregates. (The foamed glass aggregate was used for the first time on a US roadway in 2018 when JBC provided CM/CI services during the Langley Avenue Reconstruction at The Navy Yard.) The aggregate serves as the foundation for the temporary roadway which allows 3 lanes of traffic in either direction. The new roadway section was then finished with bituminous pavement and opened to traffic. The temporary roadway will remain in place until a permanent structure is built.
