Chapter Updates

As the leaves and the temperatures continue to drop, it is a good time to look back.

In September, we learned how UMaine is promoting gender equity in the workplace with a data driven approach. Dr. Gardiner provided a map on how to begin the long process to create positive change. Her informative presentation is available for those that are interested on our website at: http://www.wtsinternational.org/assets/100/7/GenderEquity_RisingTide.pdf

In October, our Bike & Brew event lucked out with unusually warm temperatures on a lovely evening of riding the Kennebec River Trail with Angela King from the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.

This month we are sending two members to Florida for Chapter Leader Training. Thank you to McFarland Johnson and VHB for sponsoring that attendance.

And on November 27th we’ll be having our Holiday Social. See below for more details!

Transportation You – volunteers needed!

The Transportation YOU committee is partnering with a group from USM called STEM Sisters. This Fall we’re visiting high school students in the Portland area to engage them in a variety of activities to inform and excite them about careers in the transportation field. We’ve already met with students over the lunch hours at Portland, Deering and Casco Bay High Schools and at the Portland Public Library after school. There are two more sessions in December that need volunteers. The transportation topic can range from bridge, highway, aviation, planning, to environmental.

December 6 – Casco Bay H.S. (11:26 am – 12:28 pm)

December 13– Casco Bay H.S.  (11:26 am – 12:28 pm)

If interested, please contact the T-You Chair, Mackenzie Demkowicz at [email protected]

Scholarship Applications

Our Chapter will be awarding two scholarships to female Maine high school seniors that will be pursuing a college degree in a STEM field, preferably transportation related in the amounts of $2,500 and $1,000. Please share this with your friends and colleagues. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2019. The application packet is available on our website at: http://www.wtsinternational.org/assets/100/22/Scholarship_Announcement_2018.pdf

If you have any questions, please contact our Scholarship Chair, Liz Brownell at [email protected]

A special thanks to Kleinfelder for sponsoring the printing and mailing costs for the scholarship applications sent to all the high schools in Maine. We appreciate your support!
