WTS-Boston Transportation YOU Q1 2024 Recap

The WTS Transportation YOU (TYOU) program is a hands-on, interactive, mentoring program that offers students an introduction to a wide variety of careers in transportation. The TYOU Committee has had a busy Q1 attending a series of events throughout the Greater Boston region. Events attended by many of the TYOU Committee volunteers include both expo-style events, workshops, and career fairs.

Events attended are as follows:

  • Career Fair @ Burlington High School
  • BPS STEM Fair @ Reggie Lewis Center
  • BPS STEM Leaders of Tomorrow @ Northeastern University
  • Explore STEAM Night @ Wakefield Public Schools
  • Girl Scout STEM Fest @ Camp Cedar, Waltham, MA

During the expo style events - a Multi-Modal Transportation Board Game (developed in collaboration with VHB) was used where each player will choose a different mode of transportation and roll dice to determine how many spaces to move, forward or back, until they overcome obstacles and complete the course. The goal is to have participants understand that a car is not always the fastest or best way to get to your destination and to consider the various transportation options including taking into consideration factors like sustainability, weather impacts, traffic, and more.

During the workshop events - a Rail Building Activity (developed in collaboration with VHB and Nelson Nygaard) was used. Inspired by the South Coast Rail project, the workshop introduces the important concepts that go into transit planning and prompt students to connect communities which are underserved by the existing transit infrastructure to Boston using Google MyMaps printouts.

Looking Ahead to 2024 TYOU Summit

TYOU Committee is looking forward to another successful TYOU Summit in Fall of 2024. Similar to previous years, this event will feature engaging workshops hosted by our sponsor companies, covering a diverse range of transportation topics. We look forward to another day filled with excitement and learning, and we extend our gratitude to all the volunteers whose dedication will make it all possible.

The summit is still in the early planning stages and the location and date are still to be determined.
