WTS Boston 2021 Summer Tour - MBTA's GLX Project
On Thursday, August 26th, please join WTS Boston for the annual Summer Tour featuring MBTA's GLX Project! The tour will be led by MBTA GLX Project Manager, Terry McCarthy, as he provides an exclusive inside look at construction progress. The tour will be followed by an opportunity to network at the Tavern at the End of the World, located nearby. Note, the price includes one drink ticket and appetizers.

The tour will tentatively take attendees along the community path to Lechmere Station and then continue to the future East Somerville station and then back to Inner Belt Road. The tour will begin and end at 200 Inner Belt Road. Please note, the route is subject to change due to the active work zones (see map here). Registrants will be contacted via email prior to the event with relevant additional information and/or changes to the event. Parking is limited. Carpooling and public transit are encouraged.
Participants should anticipate a 1.5 mile (approx.) walk through the active construction zone(s). Note, this will be rough terrain (ballast) and proper footwear will be required. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be available, but we do encourage attendees to bring their own.
Required PPE:
- Hard hat
- Safety vest
- Eye protection
- Work gloves
- Proper footwear (Street shoes / sneakers are prohibited; Work or hiking boots are acceptable.
Also, a reminder that face masks are required on all MBTA properties.
When completed, the Green Line Extension (GLX) will extend the northern end of the Green Line from Lechmere to Union Square in Somerville and College Avenue in Medford. GLX will provide service in areas that historically did not have access to fast and reliable public transit. By supporting an increased ridership of more than 50,000 trips per day, this project will significantly reduce motor vehicle emissions.

- A new Green Line branch on existing Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line, from Lechmere to Union Square in Somerville
- The relocation and reconstruction of Lechmere Station in Cambridge, plus 6 new additional T stations
- A new vehicle storage and maintenance facility
