For Women's History Month, we highlighted two female leaders in the Arizona transportation industry! Chapter DEI Chair Fatemeh Sefid sat down with ADOT Deputy Director/COO Teresa Welborn and discussed women's contributions, leadership and the importance of mentorship.

Teresa Welborn is Chief Operating Officer and a Deputy Director at the Arizona Department of Transportation. With over 30 years experience in non-profit and government work, 15 of which are in transportation, her favorite things include hiking, biking and traveling- especially with friends and family.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you personally, especially as a woman in a leadership position.

To me, the month is a chance to recognize and celebrate the many contributions that women have made throughout history. As a woman in leadership, I believe the month is also a time to promote the extraordinary benefits a diverse workforce can deliver to industry, including better decision-making, improved employee engagement and more innovation. We need all voices at the table. That is why it’s vital for women to hold leadership positions that allow them to bring their point of view, their experiences and their approach to problem solving to all situations.

In your opinion, what are some of the biggest challenges women in leadership roles still face today, and how can we address them effectively?

Women in leadership roles do face unique challenges. From getting the job in the first place to being judged on outdated stereotypes, there are a number of barriers that women still face. As someone in leadership, my hope is to encourage other women to see themselves as leaders. It’s also crucial that we build and support inclusive workplace cultures where all voices are valued. Additionally, we need to recognize that women typically juggle numerous responsibilities. That’s why it is important for employers to provide options, including flexible work schedules, remote work, parental leave, and education and tuition assistance.

How important is it for women in leadership to mentor and support other women aspiring to leadership positions.

Because I have been influenced by so many successful, bright and supportive women throughout my career, I know firsthand just how important it is for women in leadership to mentor and support other women! The WTS Metropolitan Phoenix Chapter has a fantastic mentorship program, and I encourage members to participate for career advice, encouragement, and inspiration. Whether you’re a mentor or mentee, you’re guaranteed to get something special from the experience. The goal of WTS is to advance women —I know that each one of us can individually commit to do that!
