LV Annex Hard Hat Tour: Race St Improvements

On Monday, April 7, 2025, the Lehigh Valley Annex Committee toured the Race St/Lehigh St Intersection Improvement project in historic Catasauqua, PA. Our tour guides, Ben Bayuk from PennDOT District 5-0 and Jen Leibig from TRC Companies, provided WTS with a firsthand look at the challenges faced during the construction of a widening and safety improvements project in an urbanized historic district.

The project involves complex traffic control staging to maintain traffic flow for vehicles, pedestrians, and a railroad grade crossing. It also includes the staged construction of a bridge over the Catasauqua Creek, which will take multiple years to complete due to various stream restrictions and utility relocations. The project will provide a missing connection for the D&L Trail. Ultimately, the project will install three traffic signals at closely spaced intersections to improve congestion in the Borough of Catasauqua and connectivity to the Lehigh Valley Airport.

Twenty-two members and non-members attended the tour and received a PDH.
