Event Recap: 2022 WTS-Boston Conley Container Terminal Summer Tour

On Thursday, August 25th, Nhuy Hoang, Deputy Director of Massport Capital Programs & Environmental Affairs, hosted WTS-Boston for a tour of Conley [Container] Terminal. Several members of the Massport Conley Terminal team joined Nhuy and led a bus and walking tour of both the operations center and port.

Driving down the road to the operations center, attendees learned about plans for expansion and the careful layout and software used to organize storage containers to make them easy to locate for port operators. Once inside the building, attendees were shown screens depicting the different product types aboard an incoming cargo ship and how that helps port operators prepare for various needs like refrigeration hookups as freight waits to be moved from the port onto freight trucks.

Conley Terminal is a smaller port relative to those in Long Beach California and in New York, but is creating a niche for itself as a congestion free port where ships can get in and out much more quickly. All types of different items are imported into Conley Terminal, including a large quantity of olive oil, pasta and wine!

After hearing more about how Conley Terminal stays congestion free and its commitment to Massport's Net Zero Initiative, participants had the opportunity to go up a crane via stairs and elevator and explore the mechanical area as well as the operator room where staff lift boxes from the ship and place them into their appropriate spot at the port. At 200 feet in the air, the cranes offered spectacular views of the Boston Harbor and Logan Airport.

We are so grateful for an exhilarating and informative tour led by our friends at Massport. Thank you!
