Doran Barnes, Foothill Transit - Honorable Secretary Ray LaHood Award

Named for former USDOT Secretary Ray LaHood, the WTS-LA Honorable Ray LaHood Award recognizes someone who has greatly contributed to the advancement of women and minorities in the transportation industry as well as the transportation industry itself. Foothill Transit CEO Doran Barnes has done exactly that.
A lifelong public transportation advocate, Doran Barnes has dedicated his career to making public transportation more efficient, accessible, and community focused. As Foothill Transit CEO since 2003, he leads a 38-line bus system and oversees the operations of 360 buses that serve thousands of commuters. What separates Doran from others is his absolute commitment to encoding inclusion into the agency’s values and corporate culture.
Nearly 50% of all Foothill Transit employees are women. Nearly 70% are minorities. That’s no accident. Doran approaches team building with the belief that the agency is stronger with a “rainbow of perspectives,” that diversity generates strength and productivity. And Doran focuses on hiring from the communities his agency serves.
Whether it’s encouraging employees to join professional associations, providing substantial means and encouragement for professional development and further education, or through his own personal work on several professional committees, Doran leads by example, promoting equity and access through everything he does.
