Celebrating Black History Month: A Spotlight on Sarah Owens
Since the 1970s, the observance of Black History Month has emphasized the important African-American people and events that have shaped history. The month is celebrated around the nation with calls to action, history presentations, and celebrations honoring various Black trailblazers. Recognizing Black leaders highlights the great strides that have been made in ensuring racial equality while also acknowledging the present day challenges faced by many. In celebration of Black History Month, WTS Philadelphia is proud to spotlight Sarah Owens, Airport Sustainability Planner and Consultant with C&S Companies and Chair of the WTS Philadelphia Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Communications subcommittee.
Sarah Owens, C&S Companies

My name is Sarah Owens and I am a Consultant 1 with C&S Companies in our Philadelphia office. I began with C&S as an Intern with our sustainability planning team in May 2023 and became a full-time team member in October 2023. My work within sustainability planning focuses on supporting airports on a diverse variety of sustainable initiatives. I have had the opportunity to work on airside and landside electrification, decarbonization, sustainability management plans, and stakeholder engagement sessions. Outside of my Consultant 1 duties, I am an active member of C&S’s African American partnership (CSAAP). CSAAP’s mission is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for African American identified employees to learn, share, and grow towards professional and personal development. During meetings we spotlight members, learn Black history through trivia, and share workplace tips and tricks.
In 2024, I joined the WTS ED&I MarCom Committee. To celebrate the 45th year of the Philadelphia chapter, the committee created a digital timeline of the 45 presidents who have served the Philadelphia chapter and spotlighted 45 WTS members. In addition to the timeline, I contributed to different diversity, equity, and inclusion days of significance writeups. The write-up I am most proud of would be highlighting the history of Earth Day and the ties of the day to the transportation industry. This year I have the privilege of chairing the ED&I MarCom Committee. WTS Philadelphia has given me the opportunity to meet other women in transportation who are passionate about what they do and encourage upcoming leaders in the industry. I’m excited to continue growing my leadership skills and connections within WTS!
