The Business Case for Diversity: Celebrating Diversity Month
The WTS Philadelphia ED&I Committee celebrates Diversity Month. The celebration of Diversity Month began in 2004, led by two American diversity consulting firms. The purpose of Diversity Month is to address and celebrate the growing multiculturalism taking place in our global societies. Often, diversity is only thought of in terms of race, but it includes gender, age, ability, sexual orientation, and other factors. In the business world, having a diverse workforce is important to ensure the inclusion of different perspectives and ideas when making decisions. Research has shown that diversity increases a company’s bottom line and can also nurture employees to develop strong interpersonal skills that can benefit them both in the office and out. Diversity plays a significant role in the transportation industry; bringing diverse perspectives leads to solutions that improve the transportation experience for everyone.
A 2024 article by Built In found that “diverse companies enjoy 2.3x higher cash flow per employee and are more likely to capture new markets”.
