Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Benefits

On August 4, 2021, WTS-LA hosted a discussion on BRT programs and the benefits of implementing BRT.

Lori Labrum, Sr. Transit-Rail Division Manager at AECOM moderated the program, which featured the following panelists:

  • Martha Butler, Senior Director, Mobility Corridors, LA Metro
  • Ray Sosa, Vice President, Transportation Planning, AECOM
  • Janelle Robertson, Project Manager, Utah Transit Authority

Topics covered included shifting drivers to public transit; creating multi-modal corridors that contribute equitable and greater options for mobility; BRT's role in connecting and enlivening communities; inherent flexibility in implementing BRT systems versus LRT; transit's role in improving quality of life through reduced vehicle emissions, increased physical activity, and decreased congestion and driving-related stress; obstacles to BRT, such as right-of-way availability; exclusive versus non-exclusive bus lanes in BRT; and implementing electric and fareless bus systems.
