On October 19, 2024, the WTS-Boston Transportation YOU Committee successfully held its 7th annual Summit, partnering with Peabody Public Schools to host this year’s event at the new Higgins Middle School! 
The day commenced with six (6) engaging hands-on transportation workshops, each developed and led by some of our sponsor companies. Below is a list of the workshops with a brief description and the organizations involved:

• HNTB - Railway to the Runway: The activity focused on connecting people from across MA to Logan Airport using a network of railroads. 
• Stantec - Cranes for Bridge Construction: Students learned how cranes are used to construct bridges as well as crane logistics and safety. 
• STV - Let’s Build a Moveable Bridge: Students learned about the multi-disciplines that work together to design a moveable bridge, including structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical. 
• WTS-RI - Complete Street Cross-Section Challenge: Students were given roadway pieces to construct their own cross-sections. They learned about complete streets and how different modes of transportation can carry different amounts of people.
• AECOM - Bridges and Tunnels: Students discovered many different bridge types through hands-on activity associated with each and built a cut and cover tunnel to learn more about how tunnels are constructed.
• VHB - Dwelling on Detours: Participants learned about bus rerouting decisions and practiced re-routing their own bus routes along a corridor that was shut down which would impact the bus route.

Following the workshops, the day concluded with lunch for students, along with additional mini-activities organized by GPI and Stantec. The event was a huge success, filled with enthusiasm from both students and parents.

We also greatly appreciate the involvement of Northeastern University volunteers and WTS-Rhode Island, as well as Peabody Public Schools for generously hosting the event.
