Our transportation systems have often been designed by men, for men. What does it mean for women moving through the world to be reliant on transportation systems that weren’t made for them?
Recent U.S. census data shows 55 percent of mass transit riders are women, but busses and subways are not designed for women. Hang straps can be difficult to reach, strollers can be extremely difficult to load or unload in a short period of time at a stop and we know harassment and violence is a concern for female passengers of all ages.
The experience is not much better for women who choose to drive. U.S. government data shows women are 17%-18.5% more likely to die in a car crash than men, which equals 1,342 women every year. That same data says the elderly and children also die at higher rates.
At this event, expert panelists, The Honorable Susan Molinari, former Congresswoman and Co-Chair of VERITY NOW(A Coalition for Vehicle Equity Rules in Transportation) and Natalie A. Draisin, Director, North American Office & United Nations Representative, FIA Foundation will discuss the issues of gender-blind design and gender discrimination in transportation and infrastructure policy, gaps in our knowledge and data, and what can be done to create a more equitable system.
The conversation will be moderated by Transportation Policy Expert Catherine McCullough.
This will be a virtual event held on Zoom and all attendees are encouraged to be on video to simulate an in-person session. The virtual conference information will be sent to registered attendees 48 hours and 2 hours in advance of the event.
