On Thursday, February 6th, the WTS Boston Programs Committee will be hosting our first 2025 Luncheon Seminar: Bridges in a Transportation Network panel featuring MassDOT Highway / Bridge Department Leaders. The panel will be answering questions from attendees related to the new bridge manual, changes upcoming for implementation of new federal inspection standards, signage changes related to load postings, and including bridges in non-bridge projects.
The panel will be comprised of Alexander K. Bardow P.E., State Bridge Engineer; Matthew Weidele P.E., State Bridge Ratings & Overload Engineer; Hanan Fouad P.E., State Hydraulics Engineer; and Kelsey Munns P.E., Associate Bridge Preservation Engineer. The panel will be moderated by Alyson Bedard P.E., State Bridge Preservation Engineer.

Moderator

Alyson Bedard is a licensed structural engineer with a Bachelor and Master of Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In her current role as the State Bridge Preservation Engineer, she is expanding the preservation program and working to standardize practices. She is the past chair of the Northeast Bridge Preservation Partnership, and she is hosting this year's meeting in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Panelists

Alexander Bardow has worked for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) since 1983 and has been the Massachusetts State Bridge Engineer since 1995. Alex oversees the eleven different units that make up the MassDOT Bridge Section and oversees the development of the MassDOT bridge design policy, standard details and standard specifications for bridge construction. Alex is a voting member of the AASHTO Committee on Bridges and Structures, where he serves as a member of several of its technical committees. Alex is also actively involved with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and chairs several NCHRP Project Panels.

Matthew Weidele is a licensed structural engineer and has over 27 years of structural engineering experience. He is a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). In his current role he is the Load Rating and Overload Engineer for MassDOT. He is currently a member of several AASHTO Technical Committees and NCHRP research project panels, and is project champion for a MassDOT Research project related to truck permits.

Hanan Fouad is a licensed civil engineer with a Bachelor’s degree from Alexandria University, Egypt and a Master’s of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire, where she majored in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Water Resources. In her current role as the State Hydraulics Engineer, she oversees the preparation and review of the hydraulic study reports for all the bridge-related projects that cross over waterways for the state of Massachusetts. She periodically updates the Hydrologic and Hydraulics procedures and the scour and sediment transports methods by implementing the latest AASHTO and FHWA practices into the LRFD MassDOT Bridge Manual. She uses cutting-edge technologies and software applications in hydraulic modeling. Her current goals include having her team become proficient in Coastal Engineering and publishing a stand-alone MassDOT Bridge Hydraulic Manual.

Kelsey Munns is a licensed structural engineer, with 10 years of structural engineering experience. She is a graduate of Northeastern University. In her current role as Associate Bridge Preservation Designer, she is working to standardize preservation practices. She is currently on several NCHRP research panels and a member of the Northeast Bridge Preservation Partnership.
